_Stargirl_ by Jerry Spinelli is a great heartfelt story from a boy's POV,
but very much about a very distinctive girl.
_Uglies_ and _Pretties_ by Scott Westerfeld can appeal to both boys and
girls (a boy recommended it to me), despite what looks like a girl-centric
theme.
_Whale Talk_ by Chris Crutcher is a good realistic fiction title that hits
home with everybody.
_No More Dead Dogs_ by Gordon Korman is set in 8th grade, if your High
Schoolers deign to look back, but otherwise works well with humorous and
telling "takes" on literature and reading.
_Acceleration_ by Graham McNamee is a good murder mystery with solid
character development.
_Fat Kid Rules the World_ by K.L. Going is another
Fantasy and some science fiction work well for both genders, at least at my
library, if your kids like sf. I'm a sucker for Garth Nix's _Sabriel_
series, myself.

Good luck!
