In the past five years we have recarpeted four of our libraries. We must
obtain bids for the purchase of the carpet. With that bid we require the
bidder to include shelf moving and installation. Since the bid for all is
included together the carpet layers and the shelf movers must work together.
The shelf moving people use the typical shelf moving machine with jacks and
have moved ranges loaded with books that were 12-14 shelf units long.
The only problem we consistently have with the shelf moving is that we must
remove the books on the particular shelves through which the movers locate
their equipment, a bar is placed through the unit-----------That is usually
about every 9 feet and on only one or two shelves per side of double faced
shelving.
We use book carts to store the books on. Since we use numerous book carts
to place our returned books on we usually have plenty or we may also borrow
from another branch for the short period of time they are needed.
Since the library is closed for the recarpeting project--maybe a week, we
have employees from that branch available to move the books and to reshelve
them. It really does work smoothly for us.
We are now firm believers in the use of carpet squares. Hope this helps.

Something that we have tried that others may be interested in. We set up a
big 32" TV in the front window, hooked a computer to it, made a continually

May I please have some input from those of you who have internally
illuminated signs outside your libraries? We are shopping for an
attractive, sturdy, vandal-proof sign with which to communicate library
program information to passing motorists. Although the LED ones are
probably out of our price range, we're interested in your experience with
both that type and the more conventional changeable-letter kind.
Specifically:
1. From whom did you purchase your sign? What type is it?
2. What do you know about J.M. Stewart Corp. and Robson Corp., both of
Sarasota?
3. How long has your sign been in service?
4. Any regrets with either the product or the provider?
Please respond to me directly, and I will summarize later for the list.
Thank you in advance for your willingness to give me the benefit of your
experience.

Next Tuesday I will be attending a conference planning committee meeting for
the Special Districts Association of Oregon ( www.sdao.com ). We will be
looking for good speakers for the opening and closing sessions. This is not
a library group. There are library districts as part of the organization
but there are also fire, sewer, vector control, cemetery, water, road and
other types of districts. So I am not looking for library speakers.
For the opening session we like someone who is inspiring but doesn't make us
play games (you know the kind that make you do various activities during
their presentation). It is early in the morning and we enjoy good
presenters who give practical advice in an entertaining way. We want
something we can really use not just entertainment.
For the closing session we look for someone that can speak at the final
breakfast and send people off feeling good. It does not need to be quite as
practical as the opening session.
We often pay at least between $5,000 - $10,000 for these speakers. I think
the standard fees are going up and if we find someone we like we will
probably find the money for them.
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

You should define "Young Adult" for your candidate. It's usually
middle/junior high through 12th grade.
Familiarize yourself with the issues YA librarians face: selling your
services to teens, what's new in YA literature, authors and genres kids may
be looking for, etc. You would be looking for a person who knew what YAs
are reading, viewing, and listening to.
Do you know what kinds of assignments students in the YA age group get from
their teachers? You might prepare an "assigment from hell" and ask the
candidate what resources s/he would suggest to the student with that
assignments.
ALA's Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) offers several
electronic discussion lists. I don't know if someone who's not a YALSA
member can subscribe to them on a read-only basis.
HTH!

Suzanne,
The article you cite is from April of this year.
I get regular updates from the "Defend the Honor"
campaign weekly from Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez @ UT-Austin who has written a
great book on hispanic service during WWII.
Here's the latest update:
Quote of the Week: "At this writing, we have no clue how Burns documentary
shall finally play on PBS.
However, a former associate in San Antonio told us that Burns earlier agreed
to have his filmmaker include some Hispanic veteran's material in the series
to blend with the rest of the war. Our friend said he was informed that the
Latino material would not be run as an addendum. We'll just have to sit
tight and wait what the tube shows.... "-- Odie Arambula, in the Laredo
Morning Times, July 16, 2007.
The updates from Burns and PBS change weekly. I don't think anything is
final. PBS has met with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus several times and
at first Burns & PBS refused to change anything. I'll believe it when I see
it if he adds anything new to his original documentary, including info about
the code talkers. What appears on PBS and the DVD set may be vastly
different as well.

We're interviewing right now for several positions. Quite often when
filling a position - we have to choose between several very good candidates
that we would be pleased with. However, we can only choose one - so we have
to reject good people. One of those good people might be the one to get the
job the next time.
So I recommend trying again.

For me it is also about people skills as well as the ability to think
quickly and come up with a good answer in a situation that can be hard to
handle with tact. I'm not worried about a candidate knowing policy at this
point.

Re-applying for a job........ this takes me back to my first job in a school
library. I was given a 3 month contract to trial a new position in the
school that combined library with AV. I was told that after the 3 months
they would advertize the post. I re-applied for it, didn't get it. The
person who was offered the job turned it down, so they asked me if I would
stay till the end of the school year. They re-advertized the post, but this
time I didn't reapply. About a week before the school librarian was due to
go on vacation (and I was having a real bad morning fighting a computer!),
the head teacher of the school came down to the library, and says that they
were not going to do any more interviews, and that if I wanted the job it
was mine on a permanent contract! In the end, I was there 5 years, got some
IT added to the position, took on the technical side of the school community
theater, got involved with the mini TV studio that was installed, and ran
the library for 6 months between the death of the librarian & the hire of
the new one!
Not bad for not getting the job.........
Terry @ Madisonville

Two things to remember: a good job is hard to find and it never hurts to
try. Yes, it's possible that your application might be disregarded
immediately because you failed to make a good impression the first time
around. On the other hand, it shows that you're serious and still
interested in that organization or position. If you do get an interview,
it's an opportunity to show that you are a person who can learn from her
mistakes and who doesn't give up. That would make a better impression on me
than anything. Besides, you may think you did a poor interview the first
time, since you obviously didn't get the job, but you may not have done as
badly as you think. If it's a position you're really interested in, I say
go for it. But be prepared to jump even higher to clear the hurdle.

Help needed from Children's Librarians!
I am trying to locate a children's book for someone. He read it to his son
who is now 14 which means it had to have been published before about 1995
since he didn't read it to him when he was a baby. Here are the memory
remnants:
1. It was a red cloth book.
2. It had 2 gold hammers crossed on the front (don't know how large or
if there was other artwork on the cover)
3. The illustrations and art work were very simple
4. It was about a boy who rode a bicycle, followed by a black dog.
(don't know if it was HIS dog)
5. The boy lived in the country and was lonely.
6. A house was being built next door and he hung around and was
eventually allowed to help the builders with this and that.
7. When the house was finished a new family moved in so he wasn't
lonely anymore.
8. It is not Joyce Maynard's book New House.
