A huge thank you to all of you who have responded to my recarpeting questions. Most of you agree that the job should be handled by an outside contractor, built into the budget. Some of you wrote that, for whatever reason, recarpeting your library was a DIY project, and offered many specific and helpful suggestions on getting the job done well (without disorganizing the books or killing/maiming staff). I also received various viewpoints on why or why not to carpet underneath stacks.
I met with my director today to voice my concerns about the project and gave him a printout of email excerpts (the names were omitted to protect the innocent). Although he didn't actually commit to having the moving done, he thoughtfully accepted my opinions(on loan from all of youse/y'all/you guys, bow-tiers, etc.) , and, on taking his leave, he said he would call the jobber recommended by Milliken. (Insert heavy sigh of relief here . . .) I will keep you posted.
When I sent out my questions to the list, I was feeling very discouraged indeed. I had had two extremely negative interactions with staff, both of which left me feeling upset and disillusioned. We just got through with our behemoth summer reading program carnival, which was more than the usual amount of work (for reasons I shan't divulge here) and I was depleted. When my director told me, BTW, we'll be moving the books ourselves, my heart went into fear mode. But I have received so many supportive, funny, informative emails from the list and your responses have revived me. Several of you have invited me to call if I need additional answers, or just to talk. I'm so impressed with yall's sensitivity.
