We also used Hallett when we recarpeted about 10 years ago.  It was very
interesting to watch and we certainly couldn't have done it alone.  I think
we were closed for a week or so; all activities were moved to the meeting
room but of course we were closed to the public.

Mary and Linda are right.  There are movers who can lift and roll away
entire shelving units in preparation for recarpeting and construction
projects.  The firm that we used on three occasions during the past 10 years
has a web site that demonstrates how the shelf moving process is done.

In many respects, using professional movers who have this kind of capability
can be far less expensive and produce better results than attempting to use
existing (exhausted) staff or inexperienced volunteers to move, store and
reassemble many thousands of books.  The hiring of professional movers
should be built into the budget for any construction and/or recarpeting
project.
