Greetings,
Unless you need to move the stacks in order to meet
ADA guidelines for aisle width or to reconfigure, do
not move them in order to re-carpet.
Buy enough carpet tile to cover the entire floor
including underneath the stacks and store the extras.
That way, if you do move the stacks in the future,
there will already be carpeting underneath where you
are going to move them. And, you will have carpet of
the same dye lot to fill in the gaps. If you never
move the stacks, you will always have carpet tiles
available to take care of damaged spots for the life
of the carpeting.
If you moved them in the future and already carpeted
them underneath, you would be going through the cost
of moving the stacks twice.
I have moved stacks with stack movers, hired
companies to help, carpeted floors, and stored and
maneuvered books. The difficulty of the job depends
on the specifications and the resources available.

A while back, I queried the collective brain with regard to the choice of
broadloom or tile carpeting. We have decided to go with tiles. Now, on to
the next big question: the installation process. Our director feels that we
--meaning the staff -- can handle moving books off the stacks to allow the
installers to lay carpeting under the shelving. So, my questions are:
1. Does anyone have an opinion as to whether to carpet around or under
stacks is best?
2. Has anyone worked as staff to take books down before recarpeting? If
so, how did you store the books, and where? Was it a hardship or did it run
smoothly?
3. If you used a moving company, did it keep books on the shelves when
moving the furniture? How long did it take?
4. If you've recarpeting recently, and had to move books (using either
method: staff power or an outside jobber), approximately how many books are
in your collection?
I'm trying not to freak out. Reassure me.
Thanks,
Kathleen
