Thanks to everyone who responded to my question about emergency exits. Most of you reported very little accidental use of the panic doors and so I feel confident to go ahead with the design as is! As always, you've been very helpful! Thanks!

Subject: [Publib] Emergency Exits
Lise-
In our old building, we had a push bar emergency exit in the children's area for many years and never had a problem with it. We had an eyecatching sign which said 'emergency eixt only-alarm will sound.' Although the toddlers couldn't read it, their parents could, and it worked out fine. We did have an interior alarm system (not connected to police) which sounded if any of the emergency doors were opened.
We have just opened an expanded building and have more emergency exits than you can possibly imagine, but code is code and our fire marshal is very diligent! On the doors that are "likely" to cause problems because of their location, we have an alarm built right into the push bar. The alarm itself can be armed or disarmed using a key (so you could choose to disarm it indefinitely if you wanted). The door can be simply pushed open, the alarm emits an ear piercing screech and a staff member needs to turn the alarm off. We haven't had problems, again we have an "alarm will sound" message on every door. I think you'll be okay-- and if you ever have to get the kids out in a hurry, you'll be glad that it's easy to do.
