There are two exterior doors in the Grapevine Public Library children's area. One is in the children's room and the other in the children's program room. Excepting the main entrance, all exterior doors are alarmed. The panic bars have a warning buzzer that activates when they are touched. The door opens after 15 seconds. The buzzer is a great reminder to kids and parents that the door isn't to be used unless in an emergency. The children's staff say they hear hear the buzzer about once a month * sometimes followed by a squael from small one or a warning from suddenly alert parent to 'get away from there".

Happy Thursday evening:

We are in the process of designing our new building and the architects are very concerned about the emergency exit door in the children's area. It leads out to an enclosed outdoor area that will be used for programming. However, we don't want this area to be accessible at all times and would like it to be under staff control. I'm wondering how other libraries deal with emergency exits in children's areas that have panic bars. Are kids constantly setting them off or have you devised workable solutions? TIA!
