Pat,
I think every library needs to have a selection of classics - what
those classics are sort of depends on what the community needs. For
example, we keep copies of all the titles that the public schools
assign, in a variety of formats that actually put our collection of
new "best seller" fiction to shame. We also keep an older collection
of the classics that people expect us to have, and we utilize have a
very efficient interlibrary loan system that can get materials into
the hands of patrons within a week of their request.
That said, I would not in any way cut our collection of best-sellers,
as the patrons they draw to the library are some of our biggest
supporters. The key is to find the balance, and that, I believe, is
where knowledge of the community you serve comes into play.
