Beth-Ann,

Most of the knowledge a reference librarian needs comes from
experience. We learn the basics in library school, but as time passes
new sources become available and we learn on the job which of those
sources are useful and which are less so. So you can start right from
library school and grow into being a top-notch reference librarian.

Good Evening All,

I am currently studying to earn an MLS and have enjoyed a Reference
Class
this semester. It is a lot of work, but I really like the hunting
aspect of
some of the more difficult reference questions. My question, to anyone
with
an answer, is on the path to becoming a Reference Librarian. It seems
that
a lot of specialized knowledge and understanding of the available
resources
is necessary to perform well in this field. Is it typical to begin
librarian work as a reference librarian or is this something that
comes
later in your career?

Thanks,

Beth
