We shelve by genre, and try to emulate what the record stores do.  Our 
categories are:

Rock
Pop
Classical
Country
Jazz
Blues
Movies and Musicals
New Age
Miscellaneous (Folk/Ethnic/World/Religious)

The CDs in each genre are filed alphabetically by performer.  The exception 
is classical, which is shelved mostly by composer (there are sometimes 
exceptions with compilation recordings).

Our generous Friends group purchased "browser" furniture similar to what you 
see in record stores, with multiple levels.  This arrangement has increased 
our CD circulation dramatically.
