[Publib] Batter Up

Today's reference challenge: A patron approaches your reference desk with
the following scenario:

A right-handed pitcher in a major-league game strikes out the first batter
of an inning. A second batter approaches the plate, steps in to bat
left-handed, whereupon the pitcher switches his glove to the other hand, and prepares
to pitch left-handed. The patron asks, "Can the pitcher do that? If he can,
does he get to warm up (throw practice pitches) first? What if the batter
switches to the other side of the plate?"

Your job is to find the answers, but not only that, to find the references
in the official rules to back up your assertion. Assume that today is
extremely slow at reference, and that your boss is out trying to another job at a
conference so that she will not have to supervise the likes of you.

If you have not already, you can get some help by reading this article from
today's New York Times:

But you will still have to find the patron the actual rule citation.
