[Publib] Computer Reservation Software

Vicky,

We're a classic Dynix site using SAM. I had to make sure that our SIP2 protocol only allowed patrons to enter a 14 digit barcode. It was originally set up to allow 15 characters in case a mistake was made in entering the barcode and as a result patrons could just tack an additional number onto their barcode and get additional time. We will soon be implementing a PIN as well. But no matter what you do the abuse will continue. One of branches actually has a black market in patron barcodes--some users are paying others for their card number!

Hope this helps,
Gair

Subject: [Publib] Computer Reservation Software

It seems that we have patrons who have found a way to
abuse the new PC reservation system and are either
typing in their friends' card numbers or simply
guessing what a valid library card number would be. Of
course, this enables them to use the computers for
hours. We do allow people to type in their card
numbers. Is there any library who has encountered this
problem? Is the only solution to require patrons to
scan an actual physical card?

Thanks in advance.
