Well, the important thing isn't "free" or "unfree" but functionality.

No matter how much money you spend on an IM system, the requirements 
need to be:

- communicate using several protocols at once (e.g. MSM, Yahoo, AIM, etc.)
- be as invisible as possible to your user

This isn't a case of the library choosing a system and then waiting for 
its users to fall in line - we tried that and it doesn't work.

Meebo or Trillian may meet these requirements far better than anything 
you can pay for.
