We just started using cards and keytags about 6 months ago. We have been publicizing it in our newsletter, blog, etc. Patrons are given one of each. Many patrons are thrilled with it. We are trying to stop the long-standing practice of patrons coming in without a card and producing a driver's license and the clerk has to look up the name. This is much faster and not prone to errors (we are part of a large consortium which means a person's name may bring up multiple patron entries).
Some patrons don't want to change; they say they don't want to learn a new bar code #. But in fact, I changed mine over at the beginning and I forgot my old number very quickly (or is that my memory problem?). Overall it has been successful I think.
Computer signups are done with Cybrarian and a bar code number so that is not an issue.
We have about 25,000 library patrons. I don't know how many have converted.
