[Publib] Self-Service Holds in Libraries with Self-Checkout

Another reason for wrapping of self-service holds is to slow down (it does not completely stop) the browsing of a hold shelf by patrons who do not have the item on hold for them.
Has anyone else had this issue? Where a patron will visit the hold shelf, notice an item s/he wants and walk around to the regular shelving area (if they're being sly - some just walk straight to the circ desk) and say they found the item on the shelf? How do you handle it?

The reason to cover the book is for privacy issues. We do the same thing.

My first question: Why wrap them? Doesn't this make unnecessary work for staff?
The branch of the Los Angeles Public Library I use shelves the books alphabetically but the borrower's name. They write the name on a long piece of paper and shelve the book, foredges down (I can hear the preservationists screaming now <g>) and the bookmark visible.
My major quibble with this system is that my holds are frequently shelved on the bottom shelf, and I'm getting too old and fat to rise from the floor gracefully <g>
LAPL offers self-checkout, which I don't use since my library card is on my keychain.
The library where I work doesn't have self-checkout.
