Although it was written in 1972,  I will bet that your patron was
thinking of Anya Seton's book, Green Darkness. Part of it was set in
Ightham Mote, and there was a woman boarded up in the walls.

A patron remembers reading a book sometime in the 1950s or 1960s dealing

with Ightham Mote, Knole and set in Kent County, England.  There may
have 
been mention of a skeleton found boarded up in the walls of the
building.
