Could it be something by Vita Sackville-West? She was born at Knole
(http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-knole
/). Perhaps The Edwardians (listed on another website as being inspired
by growing up at Knole)

Subject: [Publib] novel set in Kent, England
A patron remembers reading a book sometime in the 1950s or 1960s dealing
with Ightham Mote, Knole and set in Kent County, England. There may
have
been mention of a skeleton found boarded up in the walls of the
building.
She thinks the author was Jessamyn West but all the titles that had
descriptions are set in America so I think it's someone else. I've used
Novelist with no success.
Thanks.
