I want to thank everyone who responded to the question about how to
handle being asked how long it takes to die from CO2. One answer was
particularly good and helpful. As tends to happen, we have had no
further calls from the individual. Although we have had one additional
suicide, and additional attempts since I last wrote, we do not feel
from the background information that it is this individual. The town
has mobilized to try and end this spat of suicides and we can only hope
the efforts pay off.
On one positive note I did decide to speak with the brand new town
manager about the call. Being new I did not know what his reaction
would be and had to worry it would be a knee-jerk get the police and
everyone one else involved with no thought or understanding of the
underlying issue such a reaction would mean for confidence in our
library's confidentiality of requests. Fortunately he understood all
the issues and did not over react and offered all the support we needed
and became a partner in our handling of the question. It was good for
us to know we could count on him.
Thank you also for all the concern expressed.
