I know that a number of fire departments maintain old engines for parades and those sorts of PR events. That might entertain some of the younger folks. Lights flashing. the high school band playing. The middle school chorus singing. Boy Scouts doing Boy Scout things. As many different groups as you can get to be a part of the "afternoon opening festivities," the better, I say. Make it a community event. And while everyone is celebrating, you can sign them up for a card!

For the first person to go through the door after the board members cut the ribbon, I nominate that individual who has had an "active" library card longer than anyone else--that is, if you can still determine this kind of information various upgrades and conversions.

We will be moving into a new building about 1/2 mile up the road and plan to do a "book brigade" as part of our opening festivities. You might consider this if you are in close proximity to the new building.

I deleted the original post, but in addition to John's excellent suggestions:

*  Does your local high school have a marching band and/or drill team?
*  If you have a chapter of the SPCA or the Humane Society, ask if they can give a presentation on choosing a dog or cat.  
*  How about a demonstration from your local search and rescue organization?  
*  Boy or Girl Scouts or Camp Fire may have a program they can put on.
