Our community college literacy program addresses this issue:

The Family Literacy department of Waubonsee Community College, an LVA
affiliate, wrote a book called S.T.A.R. (Start Thinking about Reading) and
is an easy-to-read book for new babies on how they can "help their babies be
smart from the start." This book is available in both ENGLISH or SPANISH.
They distribute it at prenatal classes, teen parent programs, new parents at
hospitals, etc. It is available for purchase. A plastic bag, a board book,
and some miscellaneous information about parenting, etc. is also available.
One may purchase the books alone or the whole packet.

For more current information, contact:
Jo Fredell Higgins (630) 801-7900 ext. 4106
They also sell the packets and have sales across the nation:
current pricing for packets $2.50 each, purchase over 500 at $2.25 each
available as bag alone $1.00 each
all plus shipping and handling

In turn we * provide all 1 year olds with a free birthday board book... we
give "Max's Birthday" by Rosemary Wells.
