In response to Michelle Mumau and the question about audiobooks, I must
disagree heartily with the opinion that "audio books are not helping
kids learn to read," and that they are for a "lazier" generation.
Research in LIS journals and educational journals as well as commission
reports all support the use of audiobooks with readers of all ages. But
let's go beyond the data. Most of us would not say that children in
storytime are lazy. We don't suggest that illiterate adults are lazy.
We don't discount the oral tradition because it doesn't teach spelling.
Love of literature is a wonderful thing, and from it can spring
opportunities for teaching , motivation for students, and, in some
cases, a gestalt experience when the printed word meets the spoken.
