LIBRARY DIRECTOR, SOUTHFIELD (MI) PUBLIC LIBRARY

"Envision Your Future"-the Board of Trustees of the Southfield Public
Library is seeking an energetic and visionary administrator to
collaboratively lead this forward-looking organization. With its spectacular
new (2003) state-of-the-art library facility (127,000 sq. ft.), a small
satellite branch and an active outreach program, the Southfield Public
Library serves this diverse suburban Detroit community of nearly 80,000
residents-annually loaning 600,000 items, hosting more than 300 programs and
events and offering web-based and in-house access to information with more
than 150 dedicated public computers.  The staff of 135 (61.5 FTEs) utilize
the $7.4 million budget to provide exceptional programming, outstanding
popular and business collections and quality customer service. 

Responsibilities. The Director of the Southfield Public Library reports to a
five-member Library Board of Trustees and collaborates with City officials
to establish and implement a strategic vision aligning the Library's
mission, goals and objectives with community needs and City priorities.
Responsibilities include: administering library operations and overseeing
maintenance of the physical building; planning and evaluating the Library's
service plan and recommending such plans and policies to the Board and City;
preparing and administering the library budget seeking the development of
supplemental resources; ensuring the safety and welfare of patrons and
staff; fostering effective internal and external communications to build
working relationships and position the library as an active community
participant; and maintaining local, state and national affiliations to
discuss and act on library issues. For a detailed position description

Minimum Qualifications. A Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA
accredited program and the ability to qualify for a permanent professional
certificate from the Library of Michigan; a minimum of six years of
progressively responsible public library-related experience; and (highly
desirable) at least three years of successful administrative experience with
a policy-making board.  Essential attributes include superior communication
and team building skills, political savvy, thorough knowledge of financial
management, personal integrity, and strong commitments to customer service
and public library excellence. 

Compensation.  Entry salary range $80,000 - $95,000 (with placement
dependent upon experience and qualifications) with a competitive benefit
package.
