The Seattle Public Library serves a growing population of 570,000 people in
an ethnically diverse city. Seattle has more books per capita than any other
metropolitan city, and was recently named the most literate city in the
country.  It has a circulation of nearly 8 million and 2.2 million items in
its collection.  In 2005, the Library had more than 10 million visitors and
over 135,160 people attended 4,000 events.  It has an operating budget of
$38.6 million.  

 

The Public Services Director reports to the City Librarian (head of The
Seattle Public Library) and provides oversight and management of the Central
Library and 26 branch libraries and 368 FTE library staff. The Public
Services Director will foster a public service environment where the Central
Library and branch libraries are true partners in delivering services to
library users, as well as harness technology and staff creativity to deliver
information services when and where customers want them.  Key priorities
include enhancing services to immigrants and refugees, building and
promoting its "24-hour library" - the Library's vast array of online
services, and mentoring talented new librarians so they reach their
potential as library leaders.

 

The successful candidate must have a master's degree from an ALA-accredited
program and at least three years of management experience in a large urban,
