Charleston WV
___________
*Public Library Executive Director*
The award-winning Kanawha County Public Library System (KCPL) in Charleston,
West Virginia, seeks an enthusiastic, community-minded leader to direct its
operations.
Established in 1909, KCPL serves as the people's premier source of
information with a mission of developing a community where learning and
reading are revered and being well informed is valued. KCPL's nine branches
and bookmobile serve over 100,000 library card holders. With system-wide
circulation topping one million, KCPL serves as the statewide leader for
information services to the public.
KCPL is currently in the initial phase of an ambitious $50 million dollar
plan that will provide Kanawha County with a 21st century library system.
The five-year plan calls for building two new branch libraries and offering
improvements to four existing branch libraries. The heart of the Library
Building Projects is the construction of a new Main Library to be located in
downtown Charleston.
The library employs 91 full and 85 part time staff members, including 32
professional librarians, houses approximately 638,000 volumes in its
collection, 40,000 government documents, and several thousand full-text
online journals. The annual materials budget is over $1 million, with a
total budget of approximately $7 million. Technology plays a large part in
the services of the library, including the fully integrated SIRSI system.
As the Capital city of West Virginia, Charleston offers vibrant cultural
opportunities including theater, professional baseball, film festivals, and
broad and diverse musical contributions. Charleston is at the doorstep of
whitewater rafting and world-class hiking, biking, and just a few hours from
many metropolitan centers. Charleston also features a low cost of living
while offering a rich stock of housing options.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE MUST HAVE: Graduate Degree from an accredited
school in a relevant field; executive level management experience to include
budgeting and finance; a commitment to and an understanding of the unique
value of the access to information and community resource the library
offers; a demonstrated ability to be a creative leader with the ability to
foster a collaborative work environment; and a commitment to supporting an
excellent professional staff.
ADDITIONALLY, CANDIDATES SHOULD HAVE: MLS/MLIS; knowledge of the role of
information technology in teaching and learning; the ability to provide
leadership in the preparation for new construction, building renovation and
expansion; and a commitment to engage in public relations, fundraising, and
development efforts; experience in government agencies and public engagement
processes.
KCPL offers an excellent fringe benefits plan, i.e., health, dental, vision,
life, disability insurance, retirement plan, and employee leave, and
relocation assistance.
