We are seeing the same thing -- continued use of VHS although declining
and purchase of more DVDs, which in many cases is the "only show in
town." It's a shame, though, because our experience is that VHS is much
more durable. It's not uncommon to find a VHS tape that has checked out
300 times while many DVDs are done in after only a few circs. Folks
don't know how to handle DVDs properly and consequently they destroy
them. We have always cleaned and inspected our VHS tapes regularly which
I think has increased their lives.

While the circulation of VHS has declined, items are still circulating
okay. We stopped purchasing new VHS almost 2 years ago. We still might
add a donated VHS, especially if it is Disney or some other popular
children's material. We are aggressively weeding the VHS based on use
and appearance and the collection is getting smaller. We are purchasing
only DVDs and will continue to decrease shelving dedicated to VHS and
refill with DVD.

So, while circulation continues and we have the space, I'll keep some
VHS and the change will be gradual. Without advertising it or putting
signs up, I am sure that our regular VHS customers realize that their
days are numbered.

I'm wondering who out there is circulating VHS tapes, if you are
planning to switch to DVDs exclusively, and how you are implementing
that change.
