We allow a person to do what ever they want on the Internet, it's their time, (ours is 1/2 hr) within the legal ramifications of our state law (against obscene materials) and no for profit or business usage as written into our usage policy. We have a few concerns with the chat room language being used sometimes and if it is observed the person is asked to leave the site or get off the PACs. We also have a disruptive behavior policy, that could be used if needed. But for the most part we can live with the chats. It really is funny to have kids sitting next to each other on the computers chatting to each other. But adults use the chat rooms too. Are you being fair to the most frequent users of chats or are you trying to be discriminating against young people?
The social structure/nature of the computers is here to stay, try to find ways to deliver what the most people want. Most schools don't allow chats or social internet action, are we dividing the haves and have not people by denying chats and messaging at a public library? Because that is what those people with computers at home are doing, while they surf the net.
