The City of Santa Fe gives you 1/2 of your accumulated sick time, but NOT as a
direct payout. You work your last work day, and the City leaves you on the
payroll until that 1/2-of-your-sick-time runs out, and meanwhile the library
may not hire to replace you until the time has run out and you are no longer
on the payroll. Otherwise, from their point of view, the position would be
double-filled.
Sorry. I can never explain this clearly. The result is that in the case of a
long-time employee who was blessed with good health and accumulated an
enormous sick-leave balance, the librarian leaves and the library has to limp
along with an unfilled position for MONTHS.
