Laura et al,
You might want to run your question by the list-serv of www.folusa.org, as
the Friends over there have a lot of experience both with friends booksales
and with dealers.
Some have outlawed dealers, some have welcomed them, some have granted them
access only after the public is admitted because the dealers tend to be
grabby (and why not). Hopefully the Friends of the Library groups will add
their input to your question.
Many friends groups are realizing that they need to bone up on book values
because of the scenario you described. You can subscribe to the list-serv
from the FOLUSA website on this webpage:

Also, you might want to have your friends group check out
http://www.librarybooksales.org/cgi/account_check
...a helpful organization for just this sort of thing. My company is a
sponsor.

One of the Friends groups in our system was recently approached by a
used/rare book dealer. He'd recently bought a book for $1 at a Friends sale
and was selling it for $97, and apparently he feels kind of bad about this.
He has offered to go through the books the Friends receive (donations and
weeded books from the library) and sell those of value, splitting the
proceeds 50/50 (or perhaps more) with the Friends.
The Friends group is intrigued by the possibility but want to consider it
further. Does anyone have a similar set up? How does it work? What kind
of contractual arrangement do you have with the bookseller?
Currently, the Friends do sell some books online on their own, although, due
to various complicated reasons, the actual selling is being done by a
library staff member, so one obvious advantage of the proposal is that it
would free up the staff member's time.
Thanks!
