Humanities Coordinator - $12-$16 per hour for 30-40
hours per week ($18,240-$33,280)

Directs the planning, implementation and evaluation of
humanities programming throughout the Durham County
(NC) Library system.  Implements systemwide humanities
plan, including three tiers of author programming for
adults and teens each year, additional local history
programs highlighting and building upon DCL’s special
collections and unique history, and systemwide
humanities programs for young adults and children. 
Coordinates efforts of library staff and committees in
the implementation of programming plan; acts as
liaison to community groups and scholars to identify
humanities programs; evaluates humanities programming
efforts.  Assists the Collection Development
Coordinator to expand the humanities collection,
including special collections and resources to
complement humanities programming.  Works closely with
the Marketing Division Manager to promote humanities
programming and collections.  Develops annual budget
for all humanities programming and collection
development.  Keeps abreast of current trends in the
field of humanities, especially those with local
impact or that involve area institutions of higher
education.

Position is funded through a challenge grant from the
National Endowment for the Humanities to the Durham
Library Foundation.  Funding is guaranteed for three
years.

Requires knowledge of: humanities programming and
collection development; financial procedures for
allocating and monitoring library materials budget;
the service role of a public library and how to build
a collection to fulfill that role; and organizational
and project management skills.  Should have the
ability to: communicate clearly and concisely in
written and oral forms, especially with other library
staff, the community, scholars, the general public and
vendors; plan, organize and execute humanities
programs for adults, teens and children; establish and
maintain effective working relationships with library
staff, County departments, the community, scholars,
the general public and vendors; think analytically and
creatively, motivate others, adapt to changing
situations, exercise initiative and independent
judgment; conduct meetings and make presentations in a
variety of settings, and work with staff of varying
technical expertise and background.

Bachelor’s degree required; completion of master’s
degree in a humanities field and/or from an
ALA-accredited library school preferred; three to five
years of experience in a professional library and/or a
humanities field required; and possession/obtaining of
a valid North Carolina driver’s license is required.

Works closely with the Adult Services Librarian,
Collection Development Librarian, Main Library
Division Manager, Branch Services Division Manager,
Youth Services Division Manager, NC Room Librarian,
and Branch Managers.  Work is performed with
considerable independence under the supervision of the
Marketing Division Manager.
