[Publib] Clean Slate or Deep Freeze?

Hi Katie,

We use Fortres to look down the public hard drives and then use Deep
Freeze on some of our machines (including selected staff machines) to
wipe out the Internet History, temporary Internet cache, etc. (You might
think we would use Fortres' companion product Clean Slate, but the
former director wanted Deep Freeze so we got it.) I love it--if someone
has been looking at an "inappropriate" site we just reboot the machine
and everything is gone. We've been using Deep Freeze for about 6 years.
Last year and this year as we bought new machines I've been buying
Centurion Guard instead of Deep Freeze. Centurion Guard can be installed
as software, like Clean Slate or Deep Freeze, or as a physical product.
It goes in a drive bay and connects to the motherboard. We use the
physical product because it requires a key (kept in the manager's
office) and there's no chance of patrons standing around observing us
type in the password needed to turn the software off.

Typically the hardware is installed in the back of the PC so it can be
hard to access it with the key. Several years ago Bill Gates arranged
for it to be installed in the front and that's the way we have it
configured. It's easy to access and they've been very reliable.

I can highly recommend either Deep Freeze or Centurion Guard--they've
saved us much grief over the years.

Hope this helps,
Gair

Subject: [Publib] Clean Slate or Deep Freeze?

Hi everyone,

Once again I come to the collective librarian brain for advice. We're
thinking of purchasing something like Clean Slate or Deep Freeze for our
public workstations. Any thoughts/ complaints / advice that you could
give
me on these products or products of that ilk? Naturally, the web sites
of
both products I've mentioned laud themselves as being incredibly
amazing.

Any and all advice is, of course, very much appreciated.

Thanks all,

-Katie
