I am slightly puzzled by the insistence on using a library card. We
certainly prefer them, but anyone can walk in with a stolen library card
and check out lots of things using our self check. Short of requiring a
PIN, there is little we could do to stop that.
It is only when they present ID to a staff person that we know who is
actually checking out material.
We prefer that everyone use the self check (only 15% don't), but we would
never refuse to provide service to someone who could identify themselves.
Kids without ID or people who can't be bothered to carry it are another
case. They can't get service anywhere.
