We are working to develop a plan for an expansion of our library in Lawrence, KS, and that has prompted lively local debate (pro and con). However, a guest column in our local newspaper earlier this week has caused us significant consternation. However, we ultimately view this column as an opportunity to speak boldly (yet again) about the value of libraries. The article, from the Lawrence Journal-World, can be viewed at:

Interestingly, library advocates and bloggers Sarah Houghton-Jan and Michael Stephens spotted the article, and in their words, were "shocked and dismayed by the author’s words." They have both written articles on our blogs supportive of our library and explaining how libraries indeed are 21st century in their offerings.

Michael Stephens’s post on Tame the Web:

Sarah Houghton-Jan’s post on Librarian in Black:

Your thoughts regarding the original column at ljworld.com, as well as the blog responses, are most welcome.
