One of our Board members works for IBM, the originator of this project. Recently she gave the Board and staff a presentation to explain the World Community Grid. www.worldcommunitygrid.org Here is some information from the website.

"The World Community Grid's mission is to create the largest public computing grid benefiting humanity. Our work is built on the belief that technological innovation combined with visionary scientific research and large-scale volunteerism can change our world for the better. Our success depends on individuals - like you - collectively contributing their unused computer time to this not-for-profit endeavor. The time your computer is turned on, but is idle, to projects that benefit humanity! We provide the secure software that does it all for free, and you become part of a community that is helping to change the world. Once you install the software, you will be participating in World Community Grid."

Current research projects include Cancer, AIDS, and the Human Proteome Folding project.

I don't know why IBM hasn't targeted libraries since we all have computers that sit idle (when we are closed) for long periods of time. It seems such an easy way to help the world. I have downloaded the software and am participating and see no problems with my computer.
