Dear Library Community,

As Chair of ALA's Committee on Literacy, I want to encourage you to
become more involved in the American Library Association's literacy
activities. Here are important two ways to become more involved:

First, consider nominating your favorite publisher, bookseller,
hardware and/or software dealer, foundation, or similar group for the
Public Library Association's Advancement of Literacy Award. This award
recognizes groups (not individuals) that have made a significant
contribution to the advancement of adult literacy in libraries. Judging
criteria includes: (1) amount of support given to libraries for literacy
projects; (2) evidence of long-term commitment to literacy; and (3)
encouragement provided to other groups to undertake similar activity.
The nominations are due December 1. The award will be presented at the
PLA President's Reception during the 2007 ALA Annual Conference. For
more information and an online application go to:
http://www.ala.org/ala/pla/plaawards/advancementliteracy.htm

Second, ALA's Committee on Literacy represents all aspects of literacy
in libraries of all kinds. The Committee develops and recommends
literacy policy, promotes program development, supports educational
opportunities, and raises awareness of literacy within and outside the
Association. For more information about the Committee on Literacy go to:

http://www.ala.org/ala/olos/oloscommittees/commonliteracy/ALA_Committee_on_Literacy.htm

The Committee on Literacy is looking for a few good members!
Prospective members should have a passion for literacy in libraries and
be able to attend ALA's Midwinter Meetings and Annual Conferences. If
you are interested in becoming a member of the Committee on Literacy (or
another ALA Committee) volunteer online by December 4 at:
http://www.ala.org/ala/ourassociation/committees/committees.htm
Please note that committee members will then be appointed by ALA's
President-elect.

If you have any questions about the PLA Advancement of Literacy Award
please contact the PLA office at 1-800-545-2433 x5PLA (5752) or visit
the PLA website www.pla.org ( http://www.pla.org/ ). For questions
concerning ALA's literacy activities, please contact the ALA Committee
on Literacy. You may also contact the Dale Lipschultz, OLOS Literacy
Officer, at 800-545-2433, ext. 3275 or dlipschu at ala.org.

Thanks,
