Ray Bradbury in today's Wall Street Journal:
"I learned to read through the comic strips in the daily paper and the
Sunday paper. When I was three I fell in love with the Chicago Examiner comics.
When I was nine, Buck Rogers came into the world in October 1929 and sent me
into the future. …I have all of Buck Rogers put away. Then I fell in love with
Prince Valiant and moved back into the past. I wrote a love letter to Harold
Foster, who created Prince Valiant and the Tarzan Sunday funnies, and he sent
me back some original Prince Valiant boards. I still have them.
I've always believed in illustrations. I have my own comic books,
adaptations of my short stories that are word for word. If you keep the images and the
words, it's okay. The children will read them and say, 'I've got to read the
book.' It's a start. When comics are good and honest and word for word,
there's nothing wrong with them. They can make you jump up and down and run off to
the library."
