[Publib] microfilm

As one who would like nothing better than to see all back runs of old
newspapers digitized and indexed by key word, I realize that scanning
and indexing old microform newspaper runs is still problematic due to
cost.
We still commit a very large amount of money every year to microform
despite the fact that it is falling farther and farther back as a medium
acceptable to the public. Patrons increasingly prefer electronic format
over paper and have long preferred paper over microform. Nevertheless,
I'm afraid that I see no alternative to preserving old newspaper runs on
microform. Many smallish local papers won't spend the money to preserve
their newspapers. Hence, public libraries are left with the
responsibility. If we don't do it, who will?

We're still getting our local newspaper microfilmed, and have a viewer
with
a printer built in, but I'm wondering about other options. Are scanners
connected to a computer the way to go, or are there other formats
available?
