[Publib] Tutors in public libraries

We do not have a policy against. If we even thought about it, it would be
because of space rather than noise. We have teachers with state online
programs, literacy tutors, and lots of tutors with various inclusion
programs. Then again, I have seen insurance agents or investment advisors
quietly meet potential clients here. Most of the tutors are paid for their
work. I am sure that at times tutors with clients take up more than half of
our limited seating, both study tables and casual seating. They use our
educational software computers for kids, and our public internet computers.
Sometimes they sit on the floor for lack of space. Sometimes there are
behavior problems, but the tutors are trained to handle those. I really
think our other visitors like to see people getting the help they need, and
the tutors use the library in part to provide socialization training. I
long for a larger facility for them as well as for all the other library
patrons.

We don't have a policy, per se. As long as any group isn't distubing its
neighbors and otherwise adheres to our basic code of conduct (don't disturb
others; don't break the law), we leave them alone. Without interviewing
every tutor and her student, it's hard to know who's charging and who isn't.

Hi everyone: This topic has been discussed on this list previously;
however, I'd like to address it again, not from the point of view of the
noise caused by the tutors but more the specific aspect of tutors being paid
for work they're doing in the library but not as employees of the library.
I have spoken with one library that has a policy addressing this issue but
wonder if others have a policy regarding this. Thanks.
