Maryann et al,
I am very interested in this issue as well. We do not have a specific policy, but need one, especially as we move into a building more than three times the size of our current facility in a couple of months. Already, at the smaller location, we have three or four tutors who regularly set up shop in various areas to work with multiple tutees, sometimes for hours on end. They seem oblivious to the fact that they are taking up whole tables, holding loud ongoing conversations, and basically dominate whatever area they occupy.
The issue of affiliation did come up last year, when an erstwhile teacher was charged with sexual offenses against minors, and cited tutoring at the Library in his list of accomplishments. Though there was no official connection, the association may have left a negative impression in some citizens' minds.
I would appreciate hearing how other libraries deal with tutors in public libraries.

Subject: [Publib] Tutors in public libraries
Hi everyone: This topic has been discussed on this list previously; however, I'd like to address it again, not from the point of view of the noise caused by the tutors but more the specific aspect of tutors being paid for work they're doing in the library but not as employees of the library. I have spoken with one library that has a policy addressing this issue but wonder if others have a policy regarding this. Thanks.
