Thanks, I think. We have been extremely happy with this mission
statement, it actually makes sense to people. Not sure why Joe
criticizes the books are just the beginning part. Are books not the
basic foundation on which we stand? Joe calls this a muddled mission.
Sorry you don't like it. We do. Our intent was to address the fact
that we use many other kinds of resources and formats in addition to
books to serve our community.
And I'm not clear about the Humboldt Public Library comment about PLA in
Boston. In fact this mission statement dates to PLA 02 in Phoenix,
where our working group finalized the wording at breakfast in our hotel.
I am bemused that this mission statement, which has been my sig file for
quite some time, and has been appended to many publib posts, suddenly
starts a critical discussion.

Connie,
Oh my goodness! I absolutely love your library's motto:
The Elkhart Public Library provides access to resources which inform,
educate, enlighten and entertain our diverse community.....Books are
just the beginning.
"Books are just the beginning" is an absolute stroke of genius. Do you
think it has an impact on how your library is perceived in your
community? Have other libraries improved their public relations by using
similarly genius mottos?
