At the moment we have offsite drops at our "virtual branches" - one at
our Senior Center and one at Sabre (the company that owns Travelocity).
Patrons at both of those locations can place holds on items through a
specially branded version of our online catalog or request Interlibrary
Loans and have them delivered to those locations. They can return them
via the onsite bookdrop or our regular one. These drops are not open to
all library patrons, though, just those at the two locations. We
deliver and pick up books 3 times a week from the "virtual branches"
using a city vehicle. We extend the checkout period for items
passing through those locations to account for any lag time in
transport.
We are also looking into the idea of setting up bookdrops that anyone
can use at various remote locations, so I would be interested in hearing
from others who already have such systems in place.
