You might consider using a platform that works with multiple IM clients,
such Trillian or Gaim, or the increasingly popular meebo.com, which is
web-based (you can even put a little chat widget right on your library home
page). More about all of the above at the Online Reference section of the
Library Success wiki:

Subject: [Publib] Which chat reference program do you like?
Hello,
Is there anyone familiar with digital reference services, like chat
reference programs? e.g. LiveHelper, MSN Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger,
etc. Have you ever used these programs? How do you like them? Did your
library assess them before choosing one or two programs as its chat
reference programs?
In the list above, I've only used MSN messenger, and I have no chance to use
other programs. Do you have any suggestions of which one is better regarding
its features or pricing? Why? Thank you.
Best wishes,
Ann
