Hello

We have a part-time position called Reference Associate/Assistant. The
first person to hold this title was hired just to answer simple questions
during times when a Reference Librarian was unavailable. We hired a young
man with a Bachelor’s degree about 4½ years ago and he is still with us, now
working 30 hours per week. He answers all kinds of reference questions,
weeds the collection (I still review what he weeds and discard about 95%),
and assists with collection development. When we still had a Pamphlet File
I put him in charge of it and he still updates the state travels guides we
get. He teaches in our Computer Tutor program and is quite good with senior
citizens who are just beginning to learn about using computers. He is
really an asset to the Library. Now if I could just get him to go to Library
School!

Subject: [Publib] answering reference questions without MLS

Hello,

Do any of you have staff positions at your library in which the duties
include answering reference questions, but do not require an MLS? If you
do, what do you call this position and what other responsibilities do these
staff members have?

Thank you!
