Subject: [Publib] Declining Circulation
We in Toledo experienced a 2% decline in 2005 circulation statistics, and
circ stats are continuing to decline in 2006.
Some causes:
Toledo has a gradually declining population.
Door counts are down.
School-age students are doing homework on the Internet and
not using library materials.
Internal changes: ILS migration, VHS changed from 2-day to
7-day loan period, new acquisitions subsystem slowed orders-to-
public shelves.
Some solutions:
We are brainstorming and can assemble a list of things to
do: weed the collection, spend more money on best sellers, add Sunday hours,
etc., but I am wondering if each of you who must deal with this phenomenon
(past/present) would please share one idea that has worked for you. We do
not want to miss a good idea that has already yielded an upswing in circ.
We are considering slow, incremental increases as well as a few fast
turn-arounds.
Thanks for your help.
