Font size and leading are as important in your documents as they are in
books. If I want to make something more readable without increasing the
font size, I change the amount of space between the lines (the leading, if
I were actually a publisher). If you use a 12 point font and open the
spacing to 16 point, it's much easier to read, yet doesn't take as much
room as double-spacing or line-and-a-half spacing.

To do this in Word: click Format, then Paragraphs, then Spacing. Click the
down arrow for Line Spacing and select Exactly, then choose a point size at
least four points larger than the size of your text. The bigger your type
size, the larger the difference should be. Play with this feature, and
you'll be amazed what a difference it makes.
