Susan,
At the end of last year we changed from a 10 am start to a 9 am start
because of our patrons. There are several that like the early hours. We are
also considering selecting one or two days a week to open at 8 (or earlier)-
the biggest reason being that our community is full of commuters ( Reading,
Lancaster and Philadelphia) who we think will use the library more in the
morning, on their way to work. If you have several other businesses nearby
that are open early, perhaps you could visit them over several mornings to
see the amount of business they have early and also to see if they would be
willing to partner with the library grand-early opening - Post flyers, help
with give aways or provide coupons, etc for the "Early Bird" patrons.
Please let me know if you decide to do this how you make out.
Thank you,
Andrea

Subject: [Publib] early hours of operation
Hello collective wisdom:
Have any PUBLIC libraries tried opening very early in the morning, such
as 7:30 or 8am? If so, do patrons like this or do you find minimal usage?
I know this is common for university libraries, but am curious whether
it would work in public libraries. We will be moving to a temporary
facility shortly while our new building is constructed, and we are
considering opening very early and closing earlier in the evening than
our "normal" hours. I would greatly appreciate hearing about your
experiences if you've tried this. We are due to send out our summer
newsletter shortly, and I've asked patrons to let us know their
preferences, but sometimes you don't hear from enough people to make a
valid judgement, so I thought I'd ask you all.
We are located near several retail establishments that open quite early,
such as Starbucks, dry cleaners, delis, etc so I thought this might be a
worthwhile possibility to consider. We are also near a train station
and a large number of residents commute to NYC daily; often quite early.
Many thanks in advance for your responses.
