Me too Nann. I like books and people and I like hooking the people up with the books.
I always knew I wanted to do this and I tried and tried to get a job in a library when I was a teenager, but no luck. (Are you listening Bristol Public Library in CT?!) But truly I love reading and talking about books, I'm curious about everything, I like ideas and information, and I never give up searching for answers when someone asks an intriguing question. Oddly enough, this is a second career for me. I spent 15+ years in human resources/personnel administration in the business world before going to library school. So apparently, I also like "helping".
I would think long and hard before walking away from public service in the library setting to become a manager or director in a library. I always thought it was funny that people are rewarded for being good widget makers by being promoted to supervisor of the widget makers - as if the skills are remotely related. Plus if I wanted to manage people, I'd have made more money at it in the business world. I'm not saying I wouldn't take a promotion, but I'd have to think about whether it is something I really want to do. I wouldn't do it for the money.

I've tried to resist joining this thread, but you've pulled me in!
The short answer is: I'm a librarian because I like books, I like
people, and I like connecting them.
