Maybe you're thinking of Checkpoint's Discmates?  I know they were at PLA.
Their dvd cases have an internal magnetized locking mechanism.  They can be
unlocked with just a swipe through the unlocking unit.  We use them and our
circulation staff is so thankful because it's so easy to use.  The unlocking
unit is small and doesn't take up any room.
 
The downside is, they are not indestructible.  We have had some teen boys
use a screwdriver or some other tool to crack open the plastic housing
around the lock and extract the dvd.  I think any patron who was motivated
enough could do it easily.  However, 99% of our patrons are honest people
and theft has not been a major problem.
 
They will send you a sample if you ask.
