As a shy kid, my favorite part of book reports was illustrating my report. I'd laboriously make lovely posters or intricate cartoons to help convey how much I loved a book. Then I would uncomfortably stand in front of the class mumbling my report.

So I think giving kids the choice of extra rewards and several options to achieve this is a great way to make the experience much more fun. As Dale said, we need to make sure our programming addresses different learning styles. What I learned from oral book reports is that art and reading are much more fun than speaking and interacting with others. I think oral book reports seriously crippled my social skills!

Interesting reading from NYSL on summer reading programs and the effects on student achievement: http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/summer/research.htm

extra rewards for those who wrote a short review or drew a picture
illustrating the book. The reviews could be published on the library's
website, which would be an extra incentive.
