I agree wholeheartedly with Dusty Gres, that it's not important for us to ask how many books the child read, or whether the child understood the books. Hopefully that will come later. More to the point: Did the child enjoy reading the book? We can encourage this approach by asking simply, "Which book was your favorite?" or "What was your favorite part of the book?" whenever possible.
When I was young, I didn't participate in our library's summer reading program because I didn't like having to give a report to the student assistants. Fortunately, the librarian (my mother) didn't insist or even seem to care whether I participated, and I continued to read my way--for pure enjoyment--through most of the children's collection and into a library career.
