[Publib] DVD Policies

There's also the issue of "ratings creep", which is the tendency of
newer movies to get less-restrictive ratings. A movie which 20 years
ago would have been given an R rating may now receive only a PG-13
rating; one which would have been PG then is now likely to be G.

Here's a link to ALA's "Labels and Rating Systems: An Interpretation of
the Library Bill of Rights":

Remember, the film industry's ratings are set by a private organization
(Motion Picture Producers Association of America). Those who utilize
rating labels - and those who would legislate restricting access to
information based on them - should realize they are turning over
materials selection to a private organization. Also, there is nothing
stopping the MPAA from changing its ratings. It is entirely possible a
future R rating may stand for "Recommended."

Hello,

We are currently developing a policy regarding circulation of DVD's. Of
particular interest is how do other libraries handle the issue of R
rated DVD's and children under the age of 17 checking them out. Does
anyone have a policy in place that addresses this issue?

Any comments would be appreciated.
